Restaurant manager jobs are not positions that one just walks into without any prior training or experience. There are just too many aspects to the overall success of the job to put it in novice hands. Restaurant manager jobs require dedication and a natural love for the job. If you don't possess both of these attributes, then it is more likely you will burn out in the restaurant industry in a short period of time. It must be remembered that being a restaurant manager entails overseeing the many other positions such as bartenders, chefs, cashiers, waitresses and many more that are behind the scenes.

In addition, just because you are awarded one of the restaurant manager jobs doesn’t mean you will be running the whole show either. There are different management positions. You will most likely be considered for the one which matches your level of experience.

The Downsides of Restaurant Manager Jobs


  • You need to decide which type of restaurant you are most suited for. You may want a certain type of restaurant such as fine dining, but you are more suited to a sports bar type of restaurant, based on your experience.

  • You must be willing to work beyond the average 40 hour work week. In addition there are various shifts that have to be considered such as days or evenings, and then you can most likely forget about having weekends off.

  • You have to maintain a constant smile for your customers, and be stern but fair with your staff. So you are constantly wearing ''two hats'' as the saying goes.
The Upside of Restaurant Manager Jobs
  • You will most likely be making fairly substantial wages, dependant on what level of management you are at.

  • You will most likely have the authority to hire and fire your staff. This gives you the opportunity to work with people that you are more compatible with.

  • It may give you the incentive and experience you will need to open and own your own restaurant one day.
Restaurant Chef Jobs

Another very lucrative position in the food industry is the restaurant chef jobs. One of the decisions that you will have to make when going for this type of job is what type of restaurant you want to be a chef in. You are faced with choices of fine dining, fast food outlets, or bars and pubs that have a limited menu. The choice you make when going after one of the restaurant chef jobs will probably be dependant on the type of cooking you did in your training and what you appeared to excel at.

Restaurant Cashier Jobs

Restaurant cashier jobs should be fairly attainable for you if you have some cashier experience. Often employers will hire individuals for restaurant cashier jobs if they have worked in any type of cashier job before. Potential employees must however be trustworthy, and capable of using the various type or cash registers that are found in the different restaurants. That doesn’t mean you have to know every cash register on the market, but it does mean you need to have a good knowledge of the standard ones. You also need to be able to learn quickly the ones you are not familiar with.

Bartender Jobs

There are basic bartender jobs that only require you to serve the type of drinks that you would most likely find in pubs and sports bars. Nightclubs often have bartending with flare requirements. This means the prospective employee must be able to make a whole selection of tantalizing cocktails. When it comes to fine dining bartender jobs, knowing the different types of wines and what goes best with what is a real plus.

It doesn’t matter whether you are expected to offer bartending with flair, or just do basic bartending jobs; you need to have excellent people skills. You must always be cheerful and willing to offer customer satisfaction.

Bartender Manager Jobs

Holding one of the bartender manager jobs can sound pretty prestigious, but it isn’t all that glorious when it comes down to responsibilities. You will more than likely have a fair number of staff to oversee, although that depends on the size of the establishment. It will be your responsibility to see that your bartenders are mixing their drinks properly and according to regulations. You need to ensure that honesty is being portrayed at all times. Then there are the cocktail waitresses that you may be responsible for as well. The most important responsibility you will most likely have is ensuring excellent and continuous customer service. This is what makes the establishment a success and keeps bringing customers back. This not only benefits the business but ensures your position of employment as well. Bartender manager jobs undoubtedly consist of a great deal of responsibility.
