Restaurant Cashier Jobs description

Restaurant cashiers total bills, receive money, make change, fill out charge forms, and give receipts in a restaurant. Good restaurant cashiers are adept at handling money (currency notes and coins), quick and accurate at mathematical calculations, and good at answering and solving over-the-counter inquiries and problems.

Restaurant cashiers need to have the ability to work under pressure. They are required to be alert and cordial at all times. They are also required to have general knowledge of the restaurant in order to answer queries that a guest may have.

Going into detail, restaurant cashiers: receive payment by cash, check, credit cards, vouchers, or automatic debits; issue receipts, refunds, credits, or change due to customers; count money in cash drawers at the beginning of shifts to ensure that amounts are correct and that there is adequate change; greet customers entering the restaurant; establish or identify prices of goods, services or admission, and tabulate bills using calculators, cash registers, or optical price scanners; compute and record totals of transactions; issue trading stamps, and redeem food stamps and coupons; resolve customer complaints; sort, count, and wrap currency and coins; sell tickets and other items to customers; and keep periodic balance sheets of amounts and numbers of transactions.

Restaurant cashiers may: bag, box, wrap, or gift-wrap merchandise, and prepare packages; process merchandise returns and exchanges; answer customers' questions, and provide information on procedures or policies; stock shelves, and mark prices on shelves and items; and offer customers carry-out service at the completion of transactions.
